This crisis has halted the expected increase in lifespan whilst also reducing healthspan, those years lived without disease or disability, over the past decade. Over half the population is now reliant on medication, painting a concerning health outlook for the UK. Key health issues include the alarming growth of type 2 diabetes, affecting five million individuals with an additional thirteen million displaying pre-diabetic biomarkers. Cardiovascular diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are also prevalent and preventable health concerns. The obesity epidemic has soared, with nearly seventy percent of the population categorised as overweight, obese, or severely obese, significantly elevating the risk of associated diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, and various cancers.
